My Volunteering

Hello everyone, I am so excited to get this amazing journey started. This is my first post of many, and I am filled with joy to write about it. I wanted to share one of my recent volunteer experiences that has left a lasting impression.

Over the past 2 months, I have been involved in the program titled Sandwiches for Kids organized through my local Hindu temple. Every Sunday, a group of teens and their families gather in the morning to pack sack lunches for kids around the city of Houston facing food insecurity. These sack lunches include a peanut butter jelly sandwich, granola bar, juice, and raisins. Every Sunday, we create and pack 400 meals that get distributed the next day to children in need around Houston.

According to the USDA, more than 9 million children live in food insecure households. These kids have trouble getting access to nutritious food and at times any food at all. This causes many issues including starvation, weakness, and increased risk for disease. As you can see, this is an extremely sensitive issue at the national level, and requires a large amount of resources to address. Sandwiches for Kids addresses this issue at the local scale. This program has a large impact in my own community.

With Sandwiches for Kids, 400 hungry children in the local area gain access to a healthy, nutritious meal that they would otherwise not have. Although it may seem like a simple meal, this healthy and tasty lunch is packed with love and care. By spending an otherwise idle weekend morning at the program, I have made a small impact on an otherwise larger scale national issue.

From my experiences with Sandwiches for Kids, I have gained the insight that food insecurity within the Houston area is an issue that needs to be addressed now. Although it will take time, the goal of minimizing hungry households within my community is achievable. I’m excited and humbled to share this journey with you all!
